If the voltage is not correct, then you’ll need to check your electrical wiring and make sure it’s up to code.ĥ. If the voltage is correct, then the problem is most likely with your water heater. If you don’t have a multimeter, you can also try using a lamp or other appliance to see if it turns on when plugged into the outlet.Ĥ. Use a multimeter to check the voltage at the water heater plug. Turn off the water heater and unplug it from the outlet.ģ. Locate the electrical outlet that it’s plugged into.Ģ. Here’s how to check the voltage at the outlet:ġ. This will help you determine whether or not the problem is with your water heater or with your electrical wiring. If you’ve checked the circuit breaker and it still isn’t heating, the next step is to check the voltage at the outlet. If this doesn’t solve the problem, you may have another issue that requires more in-depth troubleshooting. This should reset your water heater and allow it to start working again. Wait a few minutes and then switch the breaker back to the “on” position. Find the breaker that controls your water heater and switch it to the “off” position.ģ. To fix it, you’ll need to reset the breaker.Ģ. If your water heater is not heating after replacing the elements and thermostat, it’s possible that the problem is a tripped circuit breaker. How do you test a thermostat on a water heater?.How do you test a water heater element?.What would cause a water heater to not heat?.How long does it take for a water heater to heat up after replacing the element?.It may take 4-5 hours before you get really hot water. You should notice the water start to warm. Replace cover, any fuses and turn on the power. Test for leaks.Ĩ Re-install the electrical connections and set the thermostat in the immersion to the desired temperature (55 degrees Celsius). Tighten but not too much.ħ Turn off the drain point and taps. Smear this with jointing paste and apply to the immersion heater.Ħ Insert the new heater, careful not to cross the thread. Tip: The new Immersion heater should be supplied with a fibre seal. After this close the cold water supply valve to the tank.Ĥ Identify the drain point at the bottom of the tank and using a hose, drain the tank.ĥ When the tank is drained, fully unwind the immersion heater. The water still inside the immersion tank stabilizes the thin copper wall from the pressure you apply to remove the heater. Tip: The tank is still not drained but now is the time to LOOSEN the immersion heater. Sometimes on a pressurised system this can take 10 minutes or more. Sometimes you will have to go up in the loft and drain the supply tank.ģ Open the hot water taps until the water stops. Remove all the wires and make a note of live, neutral and earth.Ģ Identify the cold water supply to the hot water tank and turn it off. If you have none of the above then your immersion heater will need changing. If you want to know how to change an immersion heater then watch this brief video:ġ Turn the immersion off electrically and remove any fuses just in case. If you find there is no electrical supply, check fuses and breakers up to the immersion. Test both sides of the thermostat, it may be faulty and can be changed without having to replace the whole immersion heater. The live supply will go through a thermostat. Remove the cover on the immersion, usually a single screw and test the electrical supply. In houses where there is a hot water coil from the boiler, turn the boiler off.Ģ Does the Immersion heater have an electrical supply? Always use a qualified electrician for this bit. How do I know my immersion heater has failed?ġ Is your hot water hot? It may sound obvious but test whether it is still hot. Regardless of system, the immersion heater is an important component and should be changed as soon as it fails. In houses with economy 7 or 10 electrical heating the immersion is the only way to heat your hot water. In most households the hot water is also heated via a heating coil from the boiler with the immersion just a back up. The exposed part looks like an upturned cup and can be found at the top of the tank (top entry) or at the side of the tank (side entry). The immersion heater is the heating element that is situated in your hot water tank. If you have any more problems scroll further down the page to our instructional guide. Firstly watch the brief instructional video below on how to change an immersion heater.
